Medicine Wheel Courses
Whether it is in nutrition, herbology, professional practice, or even as a general enthusiast of healthy lifestyles or indigenous spirituality, the devotee of the Sahaptan Healing Way utilizes a distinctly unique Medicine Wheel system to guide and enhance their intrinsic critical decision making skills and abilities, reinforcing and strengthening their ability to address and solve every-day spiritual and health problems.
Through ritual use of, and regular meditation on the sacred principles within each point of the Sahaptan Medicine Wheel, we Nemenhah train our minds and bodies to see and recognize the sacred patterns of the natural world both around and within us all. When a sufferer comes to us with their physical or spiritual health related concerns, we help them construct the Medicine Wheel pertaining to their individual situation, illuminating point by point where there may be strengths, weaknesses, and sometimes even complete breaks within the sacred patterns with which the individual lives his or her life that may be the cause of, or impeding recovery from, suffering both emotionally and physically. This sacred cultural orientation, known formally as the New Uniform Curriculum for Nemenhah Ministry (Nu-UCNM), is obligatory for all individuals seeking Spiritual Adoption into the Nemenhah and any associated bona-fide Nemenhah Ministry within the Sacred Order of Lehb (Nemenhah Church).
Yuhwihkihn (Shamanic “Way-Walker”) Medicine
To the Sahaptan practitioner, the “soul” is incorruptible and eternal, but the mind not so much. We believe the mind, with all its myriad emotions, is a phenomenal construct comprised of both the intrinsically spiritual divine aspects with which we have all been endowed by the Creators as well as the very physical neurological structure and function of the brain and its chemical processes. Pull all these elements together and we have cognition and personality in all its wondrous diversity. The Sahaptan practitioner studies the divine aspects of the human mind as explored within the Sahaptan Medicine Wheel, with special emphasis on addressing those areas of one’s behavior that may impede effective critical decision making or obstruct the sufferer’s ability to solve everyday problems. Through the study of these sacred principles, and much meditation, the Sahaptan practitioner reminds him/herself daily of the nature and wonder of his/her “true self.”
Essential to the deeper wisdom and ancient practices of the Nemenhah, is the belief that wisdom and the spiritual guidance of all those who came before us transcends both time and space, accessible to the shamanic practitioner through access to what our Ancestors referred to as “the Way.” We believe The Way is a special place provided for us by the Creators that is not only set apart from the natural passage of time within creation itself but is set at the crossroads wherein all space and time intersect. We believe that such a place is accessible by the shamanic practice of Yuhwihkihn (“Way-Walking”), which utilizes the sacred faculties of the body and the mind, working together in tandem, to light the spark of Wyaykihn (revelation, deep insight) and ultimately open the gates to that deeper connection with his/her Ancestors. It is upon this sacred spiritual plane, The Way, that the Pehli may commune with and share in the experiences of his or her kindred dead, whose unique insights, personal experiences, and individual perspectives on life’s challenges both clarify and assist today’s Sahaptan practitioner.
Through a series of ritual meditations conjoined with physical exercises designed to induce a fully conscious state of deep muscle relaxation, we walk the sacred path laid out by the Medicine Wheel, thereby acquiring the mental discipline and sacred language by which the Pehli navigates the shamanic path of the Ancients and walks upon The Way.
